We grieve for Christy Schwundeck Shot by the police on 19th of May in Jobcenter Gallus, Frankfurt/Main, Germany
We demand: Investigation, Justice, Compensation
Why was Christy Schwundeck shot?
We demand truth and justice!
We are angry and sad: Christy Schwundeck was shot dead by the German police!
We demand truth and justice for Christy Schwundeck!
On the 19th of May 2011, Ms. Christy Schwundeck was shot in a Jobcenter in Frankfurt/Main by the police. On the same day, the Frankfurt prosecution said in an interview with the press, that the police officer had shot Ms. Schwundeck as result of self-defense, because she had attacked an officer with a knife.
In a cynical press release the German Police Trade Union identified „berserk applicants“ as the problem and declared Jobcenter staff and police-officers as victims.
We want to know: Why should we accept that two police officers weren’t able to disarm a woman, who supposedly had a knife, but had to shot her, directly?
We want to know: How can it be, that police officers pull their weapons that fast and shoot into the stomach, which definitely leads to death?
Do they again want to hush up the circumstances of a black person’s death in Germany? The behaviour of the police, who shot Christy Schwundeck into the stomach, and thereby mortally wounding her, was and is not talked about in the media. Let us remember other victims of police violence whose deaths were never solved: We mention Dominique Kumadio, who was shot in 2008 in Dortmund by police out of their car– the police officers were never put to trial. We mention Mariame N’Deye Sarr, who was shot by a police man in 2001, while she had her daughter in her arms. Her death was never investigated. Let not forget Oury Jalloh, whose murder in a police station in Dessau was only brought to court after an insistent struggle. His murderers aren’t punished till this day. We would have to mention many more…
We want to know: Who will be next? Shall we again accept that a shooting is declared as unimportant, then hushed up and in the end stays unsolved?
The press portrayed Christy Schwundeck as crazy and aggressive. Whereas the police-woman was declared the victim. The press used discriminating keywords like „drugs“ and „homeless“ to describe Christy Schwundeck. Her name was not given by the police for a long time. She was a person without a name and without a face.
We want to know: Why do the media revile and stereotype the victim? And how can it be, that no one is questioning the behaviour of the police?
The Jobcenter was closed and no information about the death was released. The name of Christy Schwundeck was not given until a week later. When relatives wanted to lay down a floral wreath at the Jobcenter to express their grief, they were hindered to do so. The wreath, which they had to lay down on the pavement, was immediately removed.
We want to know: Does Christy Schwundeck have to dissapear, so the perpetrator will never be punished?
We say: Christy Schwundeck was one of us! She was mother and wife, she was a human being with dreams and hopes, with joys and sufferings! We don’t accept that people forget her. We don’t accept that she is slandered, so that it seems justified that she was shot!
We demand a detailed investigation of the shooting of Christy Schwundeck!
We demand a proper rule of law and legal proceedings against the police officers!
